Katie Clay
I grew up in a musical family and had piano lessons from an early age. I completed my
ABRSM Grade 8 exams in piano and clarinet while I was in sixth form at school, where I also
loved singing in the choir. Following school, I trained at Canterbury Christ Church University
to become a teacher, and graduated with a BA in Primary Education with a music specialism
in 2005. I worked full time as a Primary Teacher between September 2005 and June 2013,
when my first daughter was born. Teaching has always been a job I’ve been passionate
about: I love working with children and finding ways to make learning fun and engaging.
During my time in school I also had the privilege of coaching the school choir, which was a
real joy. I loved watching the children’s voices developing, and their confidence and
wellbeing soaring as we worked as a team to create beautiful music. Since my three children
have been born I have continued to work with children and music – including working part
time as a teacher, teaching music throughout the school, and teaching peripatetic piano
lessons across a number of schools. I love teaching music – I think it is such a brilliant
vehicle for teaching children all manner of life skills - and it has such a positive impact on
their wellbeing – as well as mine!
